🔥 I've been actively learning and working with Web Development for over 10 years.

💡 Here are ten lessons for someone just starting out:

1. Understand how the Web works End-to-End

As you learn and work on your end, you should also be learning how everything fits as a whole. Aim to be able to build an entire system from end to end.

Building on top of the first lesson, going full-stack on your personal projects will force you to learn everything you need.

After learning the basics and exploring different technologies, it's time to pick a single framework and start being productive. The right framework for you is the one where you can prototype the fastest.

The single most important lesson is to get your hands dirty and start working on a project right away and apply what you are learning. A simple to-do app or a personal website are always great options.

5. Pick a couple of mentors, and listen only to them

These can be people that you know or even just a couple of YouTube videos. Make sure the package has all the knowledge you need to finish the project and follow those guidelines without distractions.

Make sure to work on a public repo and talk about the challenges that you've faced, and the solutions you employed. No one is going to judge your code (it's not that bad), and no one is going to steal your idea (it's not that good).

The second most important lesson is to document every critical task and operation, even the simple ones. Especially the simple ones. Having cheat sheets and templates for everything you do is a life hack.

Every single error, problem, mistake, or pitfall that you'll encounter as a beginner has already been solved by someone else online. There are also many 3rd party libraries full of features for you to enrich your app. Do not waste time reinventing the wheel.

9. Always have a production-ready boilerplate

Never miss an opportunity because you didn't have a boilerplate ready to work on top of.

There are new people learning Web Development every single day, and the best way to stay consistent is to be around other people who are on the same path as you. Share your projects, notes, and docs. Contribute to each other's GitHub. Become part of a community that can support you all the way through.

10 Lessons from 10 years of Web Development

 You have a good grasp of HTML and CSS, maybe you also wrote some JavaScript. You can follow directions and execute requirements.

 You have mastered a framework (like React or Angular) and are able to design and develop an entire application by yourself. 

 You can lead a project and bring it to life from end to end. Not only on the development but also everything about architecture, infrastructure, continuous integration, testing, and deployment. 

From here on out is just a matter of taking on more responsibility and accountability, being able to train and manage all of the above, and being able to hire the right talent for your team.

3 Stages of a Web Developer

⚡ Here are 14 steps you can take if you want to start today:


The project would be your personal website where you would document all the knowledge 🥁 about creating websites.

Having something to work on is key to learning anything, and this specific project is very deliberate.

Not only does it start the good habit of documenting your work.

It's also super valuable to call back in a time of need and can also be used as content to share with the community.


First, you want to focus on learning about the building blocks of a website.

Once you can do basic styling and navigation, and understand how display, spacing, sizing, and positioning works you are good to go.

After finishing the website, publish it and everything else you do on GitHub.

Wtf is a GitHub? You ask

Good question, it’s a place to manage Git repositories

Wtf is a Git repository? The next thing you're gonna learn.

You should be able to set up a public repository for your work, create at least one branch and know how to merge them.

Do not dive into anything backend or web server related.

The goal is to understand what Node.js and NPM are, how to set up a new project, and how to publish a package. A simple console.log should be enough.

You should also become familiar with the JSON format.


Set up TypeScript on top of your Node.js environment and follow along with the best JavaScript + Typescript tutorial available.

Best decision you can make in 2023.


Start a new project like a simple note-taking app to learn React.

No backend - save everything to local storage.

You should be able to start a React application, build components, manage states, and work with hooks.

You should also be able to make HTTP requests and work with CRUD APIs.

Deploy it on Vercel or Netlify.

Or whatever other UI library you find an affinity for.

MUI is still my number-one choice in 2023.


Now bring back the very first project.

The goal is to build your new personal website in a blog format powered by all this new technology.

Again the project is very deliberate to be a content hub after we set up the Content Management System (CMS).


This going to be the Content Management System (CMS).

Their default blog schema is pretty good, you just need to build a good UI on top of it and post about everything new you’ve learned.


All the backend services you could ever need with a free plan.

Build a production-ready boilerplate with all the technologies you learned so far and put it to the test.


Take this time to solidify all the knowledge.

Play around and explore fun 3rd party libraries or even new technologies.

Build a cool portfolio of work on top of your boilerplate.

Setup continuous integration and deployment


Seal the deal with some automated workflows for quality assurance and continuous delivery.
